Happy Sunday!

It was with great humor, a few months ago, that I received my first official ban from a government. It was for this iPhoto slideshow I made “for” a friend of mine three years ago:

I think I made it as a joke on how ubiquitous his name was on the Internet. It hasn’t kept him from getting any jobs at any rate (that I’m aware of).

Anyway, I noticed earlier this year, via YouTube, that the presence of Tina Turner had gotten the clip banned in Germany— copyright WMG, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Chappell, and Warner Chappell, apparently. The Volcano Syzygy video I put up yesterday had an Aphex Twin clip in the background and it seems they move faster these days; I got an email within an hour letting me know the audio would be muted to the public.

I just re-uploaded it with me whamming on the old CTK-515 instead so, hey, at least the Copyright Cops tricked me into spending my time creatively. Now if only I could keep a beat on my smartphone drum pad…

We engaged in some good natured ribbing of Sam and my mother this evening when they were briefly psychologically unable to differentiate a holiday season depicted in a sitcom and our real world’s actual timetable. Driving home, Sam and I listened to “Some People Don’t Even Know If It’s Christmastime.” I wanted to link it as a punchline to that life vignette but somehow a cursory glance for “Daniel Johnston Christmas” yielded the Battle of Kruger:

.. something I think of as an early example of how omnipresent viral videos can get now. I remember seeing it at my cousin’s home in San Diego and my neighboring cubicle inside a week of eachother back when it was catching fire. Now if only it was the singer-songwriter I wanted. The Internet is a many-splendored thing but it’s also damned fickle.

Devin and I often talk about what our band will be like when the idea finally comes to fruition. Here’s some inspiration I found today:

Ideas I want to steal from this band for our future ensemble include:

Orange costumes

Xylophones

Go-go boots

Cute haircuts

Accordions

Attitude

I’ve determined that this is either what men do when they hangout or the prequel to Wedding Crashers.

Devin and I have at length discussed our post-apocolypse which include putting together a local variety show including various song and dance routines.

I am quite sure this will be added to our repertoire.

A guy told me really excitedly this winter that the solo album from the Sigur Rós lead singer was going to be the album of the summer— that you’d hear it blasting from the car of anyone who’s cool. He was so excited and it made me really happy to hear someone evangelizing a current album instead of just slamming the incessant cesspool that pop music has become. I went ahead and bought it when I saw it in a store a few weeks later and— I don’t know. It’s pretty structurally clever in some places but that never really means anything for listenability; just ask Captain Beefheart. Obviously, Go is a lot nicer to listen to than Trout Mask Replica— some of the operatic swells have a great galloping panchromatic beauty to them— but then you realize it’s because you’re riding astride an armored unicorn, straight for the heart of Care-a-Lot. It’s music I feel like I’m going to get beaten up for listening to— which makes it kind of hard to listen to.

Anyway. My Auditory Enjoyment Index has been out of commission since I accidentally listened to that new LCD Soundsystem album grading lab finals. Confidential to James Murphy— making it sound like you sampled “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)” is not a blank check for lines like

As night has such a local ring

And love and rock are pickup things

And you know it, yeah, you know it

Yeah, you know, take

People are paying attention, man. We haven’t all had enough Pabst to get lost in the handclaps.

Here’s my Summer Jam:
